The Truth About Naturopathic Doctors

by | Apr 12, 2019 | Health

When people begin speaking about their experiences with a naturopathic doctor in NJ, the very first question almost everyone asks is, “What is a naturopathic doctor?” This is a common question and easy to answer.

The 2009 Department of Labor Custom Report states the job description of a naturopathic doctor as follows: “Diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases using a system of practice that is based on the natural healing capacity of individuals. May use physiological, psychological or mechanical methods. May also use natural medicines, prescription or legend drugs, foods, herbs, or other natural remedies.”

What this means is that a naturopathic doctor uses all available tools, including conventional medicine, ancient herbal treatments, and other non-traditional forms of medicine to alleviate issues for patients. These doctors receive their education and training from accredited naturopathic medical colleges and are taught to utilize a person’s self-healing abilities as much as possible.

Often times, naturopathic doctors will be general practitioners, much like a regular MD. Some naturopathic doctors choose to specialize in specific areas of medicine and health care. Popular areas of specialty include Endocrinology, Environmental Medicine, Gastroenterology, Parenteral Therapies, Pediatrics, Primary Care Physicians, Psychiatry, and Oncology.

Another concern raised by people unfamiliar with any form of naturopathic doctor NJ is whether or not the practice is science-based. This is completely untrue as naturopathic doctors spend at least four years at an accredited medical education college or candidate school of the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. During this time, students undergo a minimum of two years studying biomedical sciences that are used to prepare medical students to be doctors.

Naturopathic medicine adds in the benefits that natural medicine can add to a productive patient plan. Our bodies have a natural ability to help heal that we can learn about and use to live better.
